Origin and Meaning of Humpty Dumpty

Rhyme's melody is believed to be first recorded in late eighteenth-century, by James William Elliott's National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs. As common with other nursery rhymes, several theories have been advanced to explain the origin and meaning of “Humpty Dumpty” nursery rhyme. The author or composer of the this popular kids song is not known.

As per Oxford English Dictionary, “Humpty Dumpty” is a drink which was prepared in seventeenth century by boiling brandy with ale. Katherine Elwes Thomas claims that Humpty Dumpty refers to King Richard III of England, who was defeated at Bosworth Field in 1485.

The other theory was advanced by Professor David Daube, who suggested that Humpty Dumpty was a "tortoise" siege engine. According to him, this was used to reach the walls of the Parliamentary held city of Gloucester when the city was sieged in the English Civil War.

In the website of Colchester tourist board, Humpty Dumpty is a large canon, which was used by royal defenders in the siege of 1648.  A shot from a Parliamentary cannon damaged the wall beneath Humpty Dumpty, and thus the canon tumbled to the ground. And the Cavaliers or "all the King's men” made attempts to put Humpty Dumpty on to another part of the wall, but as cannon was too heavy to lift, so "All the King's horses and all the King's men, couldn't put Humpty together again".

Though the similar versions have been recorded by folklorists in several other languages, such as "Lille Trille" in Swedish and Norwegian, "Boule Boule" in French, and "Humpelken-Pumpelken" or "Runtzelken-Puntzelken" in different parts of Germany, but none of them is as popular as the English language version “Humpty Dumpty”.
